Mary Butterworth

    Mary Butterworth was born in Scotland in 1896. She graduated from Aberdeen University with a Masters degree and later taught high school in England. Mrs. Butterworth came to Edmonton in 1926 and was an active member of the University Women's Club, the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E.), the City Names Advisory Board, and was instrumental in the naming of the Glengarry district.
    Mrs. Butterworth served as an Edmonton Public School Board trustee from 1945 to 1957. She was board chairman in 1955 and Conference Committee chairman for all of her twelve years on the board.

    An early environmentalist and champion of women's rights, she ardently campaigned for the right of married female teachers to gain tenure.

    Mary Butterworth was one of the first trustees to accompany the superintendent of schools as he interviewed teaching candidates across Canada.

    From 1946 to 1957 she was the district's representative on the executive of the Alberta School Trustees Association and was an active member of the Canadian School Trustees Association.

    Mary Butterworth was one of the driving forces behind the design and construction of Victoria School.
