Lesson 3 - Part 4

Grade 8 Brazil Webpage Assignment -

The purpose of this class is to increase your ability to understand the functionality of the World Wide Web.
In order to do this, one of the best ways of learning, is to,

"... get messy, take chances and make mistakes." (Miss Frizzel - The Magic SchoolBus)

Good day;
Here is the first part of the assignment.

In order to complete this project you will have some options, (coming up on the next page) but some of the lesson will be mandatory (that is, you must complete it).

Okay, so here is the plan. Your final unit in Social Studies this year will be on Brazil. So...

If you haven't already guessed, you are going to be building a Brazil website. However, you will have some options as to how to complete the site with regards to content, level of effort, etc.

The overarching question we are trying to answer through all this research is: What issues and trends are likely to influence the relationships of the people of Brazil with their physical environment?

Related to this are the following:
•What are the major physical features of South America?
• How does the culture of Brazil reflect the variety of origins of its people?
• How has human settlement altered the physical environment of Brazil (past and present)?
•What has been the interaction between physical and human geography in Brazil over time?

Now, that's a lot of heavy duty stuff. So what we have done, is break it down into 3 different levels of difficulty for evaluating your Brazil website. Some of the basics apply to everyone. Let's start with those.

Your research / answers / conclusions to each of the above 5 questions should take the form of one website. (a collection of webpages) Each questions should be researched, reported on, and answered on it's own webpage, and those 5 webpages should be linked together and contain links to 2 more webpages - a glossary of new terms (includes the word and a definition of that word) as well as a bibliography page (where you state the locations and references for all the research you completed).

This is a total of 7 individual webpages. Everyone must have this. How you go about presenting the data / information / inferences / conclusions on those pages, is up to you.

You will be evaluated on your ability to answer all the above 5 questions as well as how you integrate some of the more advanced features of HTML should you so desire.

Your overall 7 page website and the evaluation of it will fall into one of three categories:

Apprentice - a mark will be assigned between 50 - 65%
Assumes that you have met the basic criteria.
Master - a mark will be assigned between 65 - 80%
Assumes that you have surpassed the basic criteria
Wizard - a mark will be assigned between 80 - 100%
Assumes that you have surpassed the basic criteria and applied your learning to other situations

On the next page, I have outlined the specific criteria for each of the three levels. You need to keep in mind, that your choice of which level to challenge, is only limited by your willingness to make the effort!

TTFN :-)
